Ilex (Winterberry)-Orange

I adore orange. The color of optimism and bounty. Secondly, I love Winterberry so that is why this crop is my favorite thing we grow at Star Valley, above all else. This orange Winterberry is not golden or milky as some offerings I’ve seen. This fruit is screaming undeniably orange, and beautiful. A deciduous holly, Ilex verticillata grows wild in the low lying areas throughout the area but it is when it is cultivated that the plant really shines. The rows in the field before they’re cut are something to see, strips of bright red across a dormant field. These are defoliated stems sometimes so packed with berries the stem isn’t even visible. Thanks to our proactive apiary endeavors we have truly abundant fruit set on these plants, and as an added bonus honey in the fall! As much as we grow this crop sells out fast so order well in advance.
